Between 9th – 11th May, WAVES delivered two media architecture installations, one in Singapore at the Media Art Nexus NTU (MAN NTU) under the auspices of NTU Art and Heritage Museum, and one in the UK, at the Gulbenkian Media Façade (GMF) which is part of the Gulbenkian, the University of Kent’s Art Centre. The selected artworks made use of digital technologies in the public sphere to connect people, culture and community across geographies, closing the distance between the two continents.
The Media Art Nexus (MAN) has a goal of redefining the meaning of time-based media art in the public realm of Singapore and beyond. It is the first non-commercial urban screen of its kind in Singapore, dedicated exclusively to art content.
MAN is an artist-led urban media platform – 15m by 2m large LED media wall – exhibition space. The platform is one of the various NTU Art & Heritage Museum’s Art on Campus initiatives, a programme that started in 2014 with the aim of “bringing art to people”. The series of over 30 public art installations are part of NTU Museum Art Trail on Campus featuring a collection that is unique in Singapore.
Installed in 2017, the Gulbenkian Media Façade (GMF) was an integrated outdoor media platform for projection-mapping, located at the University of Kent’s Art centre. It was the first permanent outdoor projection mapping platform in Canterbury, however, now in 2022, it no longer remains.
Covering 72 metres of surface area, the GMF was accessible to locals and university communities and was part of the Gulbenkian’s long-term strategy to bring digital technologies into the arts, engaging with local, international, emerging and established artists and communities alike, in the media industry.
It was equipped with 3 high-lumen projectors with the dimensions of 20m x 3.6m.

This art video explores the major threat of air pollution to our lives and the environment. Pollution is conveyed in this clip through the mundanities of everyday life and its inevitable effects on the quality of air.
Artist: Robert Hales
As digital artists, it is important to consider the impact that the production of our work has. This piece explores the human and ecological costs of digital creation.
Artist: Emma Payne
Inspired by my love of snorkelling and relating to the plastic pollution in water which is causing harm to our sea life. A contrast of visually appealing colours interacting with plastic items within a mass of water.
Artist: Jiale Ng
Inspired by the Quantum Electrodynamics theory of photons and electrons where electrical fields are produced by each electron at the position of the other, PATHS explores the behaviour of the atomic particles which creates a ripple and magnetic field.
Artist: Iffah Qistina Irwan
MORTALS are beings like us birthed here on Earth to find our Other – our soulmate – and become one by the strong force we have together to get back to our real ‘home’. Just like a soul, entangled with another soul, to become an entity and find its way back to its Creator through a portal of superposition.
Artist: Jacob Chio
Telepotted takes place in the future where quantum teleportation has been commercialized and found its place in the e-commerce industry. The potted plant glitches at the end, hinting at the philosophical and ethical problems that come with quantum teleportation.
Artist: Boatin Kingsley
Spiritual Waves is an abstract conceptualization of the duality between brain waves and spirituality. By using soft melodic audio aimed at the theta waves this piece aims to evoke a calm and relaxing effect which should help de-stress the mind and soul.
Artist: Shanjok Gurung
This work represents my interpretation of Pollution and Ecology. I showcase different factors which are harming our environment, and for which we all are responsible.
Artist: Grace Pulford
Having spent my life growing up in the seaside towns in Kent, I’m always fascinated yet heartbroken at the causes of sea life pollution. The use of live video and stop-motion has allowed me to represent both the natural beauty of the sea and the lasting damage we humans cause it.
Artist: TJ Salango
A compilation of sequences, rather than a single narrative, that aims to draw more attention to visual and aural experiences, focusing on both air and water pollution.
Artist: Viena Lee Lin Tsin
Actuality is a visual narrative of a girl who realises that reality is not what she thinks it is. Upon delving into Quantum Physics, the artist realises that there is more to the world than meets the eye and hence translates this conundrum into the piece.
Artists: Margaret Suhasini & Nur Liyana Azhar
Skopein is a light-hearted and quirky video installation that explores two dimensions of quantum theory. They are duality and spooky actions at a distance. These concepts are intertwined and expressed through movements of the eyes and the myth of the Turkish eye.
Artists: Guanhua Chan & Carol Leng
Samsara: The Wanderer’s Abode explores the entanglement between dichotomous yet symbiotic relationships. It is an artistic portrayal of the transformational possibilities the metaphysical undergoes under the influence of one’s corporeal actions and deeds.
Artist: Andree Hansen Wibowo
The Physics of Dorian Gray is a representational attempt at visualizing the quantum physic concept of entanglement through metaphors and narratives. A project that hopefully demonstrates how we can reinvent classical works of art as a vehicle for contemporary theories.
Artist: Tiphene Amber Lechleiter
A commentary on the human disregard the nature that surrounds us. It follows a girl who has become lost in society, and so feels a sense of unease. She will find her place in nature, and her happiness too.
Artist: Molly Harris
An abstract approach to the meaning behind pollution and the way in which social media affects our brain and the way in which materialistic items are cluttering our minds and the planet.
Artist: Dan Coakley
This audio-visual piece portrays the effects global warming is having on woodland and forest fires. With temperatures rising, the atmosphere is getting hotter and dryer, and forest fires are starting more easily.
Artist: Tristan Sauer
Gods and Monsters explore the human desire to explain the universe and its wonders. Taking quantum entanglement as the mystery for our existence and throwing its explanation into the hands of god or something else.
Artist: Loh Wei Ting
When separated far away from one another 2 particles remain entangled, inextricably connected, communicating with one another. In Buddhism, the spiritual principle of KARMA influences the future of an individual. Here Heaven & Hell are 2 worlds entangled with what you have done on Earth.
Artist: Felix Antonio Hudescu
Quantum Commuters is a sentimental and ethereal portrayal of the daily commute. It seeks to draw attention to the serenity and beauty of routine, specifically in the collective movement of bodies across space to and from their livelihoods.
Artist: Ajay Kumar
The Universe Untold is a visual metaphor about how the universe began. The universe as we know it started with a small singularity, then inflated over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today.
Artist: Sam Barrett
A piece about how we are polluting and destroying our beautiful environment and yet many of us choose to ignore this in our day to day lives. We would much rather stare at our screens than make a change.
Artist: Petar Mihov
From a human point of view, the beginning of Earth was the beginning of life, an explosion of light in the darkness of the Universe. The Earth is a living creature, where blue and greens flow.
Artist: David Burgess
Surrounded by the endless, silent void of space, our planet Earth resides floating. Below its atmosphere, there is always noise. We are in constant communication, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Atoms exist in a different universe from ours, hence our minds see these atoms differently from their real forms. In this visual piece, the atoms were born from the big bang. They continue to divide and reproduce themselves creating our universe.

The void is a vacuous state that absorbs the energy of the body to reach a point-blank. As the body appears to look into the void, the absorbed bodies react and become an intermittent collection of waves that filter in and out of existence.
Artist: Daryl Bradley Tan
‘Parallels’ is an abstract piece which unfolds the creation of the universe through the big bang, represented by light being “switched-on”. The concept of quantum entanglement is depicted by the inversely proportional relationship between elements in this space.
Artist: Aaron Kang
Phase Shift is loosely based upon the double-slit experiment. The long exposure shots of the night lights from the city represent the waves, whereas the buildings represent the slits. The waves also metaphorically represent people as their lives intertwine in amongst architecture.
